Life Transitions
WHAT ARE LIFE TRANSITIONS?
Simply put, a life transition is a sudden change or interruption that has occurred in your life that for lack of better words has “thrown you off.” Changes in our lives can be both good and bad, depending on your perception of the change. However, there are times when even good changes can cause stress in our lives and may result in feelings of anxiety and depression; an example of such a change might be a college student who has gone off to school but is finding themselves overwhelmed by campus life and struggling with not being near family.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE LIFE TRANSITIONS PEOPLE SEEK COUNSELING FOR?
Every person is unique in the way they deal with change in their lives, and while change cannot be avoided many people find it difficult to manage new stressors. Some of the common life transitions individuals seek therapy for include:
- Going through a divorce or break-up
- Death of a loved one
- Work-related stress and changes
- Job Loss
- Managing the stress of college life
- Getting married
- Relocating
- Health Issues
- Financial concerns and anxieties
- And many, many more…
HOW DO YOU TREAT THE STRESS OF LIFE TRANSITIONS?
In order to help clients who are dealing with new life transitions, I help them by assessing the impact of the event on their mental health, providing appropriate therapy, and teaching them skills to better deal with these changes. These skills include problem-solving strategies, assertive communication skills, anxiety, and stress management techniques oftentimes providing them with connections to additional resources.
