LGBTQIA+ Relationship Concerns

Develop the skills you need to work through difficult relationships!

ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP ISSUES

Interpersonal conflicts are very often seen in LGBTQ+ relationships, often with clients expressing that “it’s hard to find a serious relationship”, “I keep meeting the wrong persons' or expressing stress and conflicts that are occurring between them and their partners. Many clients continually find themselves in toxic relationships with individuals and feel as though they keep making the same mistakes over and over.

Many of these clients have not learned to identify the triggers and signs early on of a potentially bad relationship, are not certain of what they want and some can’t seem to let go of a situation-ship that they know isn’t working for them.

FAMILY RELATIONSHIP ISSUES

As members of the LGBTQ+ community, many of us are not strangers to having conflicts with our family of origin. Growing up, many have seen this as being excluded, criticized, and emotionally/verbally abused for their sexuality. There have even been times in the lives of some LGBTQ+ members when this abuse has become physical. Others, while having a relationship with their family realize that this relationship isn’t close because their family members never fully accepted them for being who they are. These issues often lead to feelings of worthlessness, low self-esteem, and abandonment issues. In more severe cases, clients are left with the ongoing effects of their traumatic past which have not yet been resolved.

Family issues can also arise within our “chosen families'' which many members of the LGBTQ+ community have adopted due to being pushed away and ostracized by their family of origin. No matter at which point these issues arise, if you don’t deal with them they can cause you mental anguish and feelings of depression. Resolving these conflicts internally or externally is essential for your healing.

HOW DO WE WORK ON IMPROVING THESE RELATIONSHIPS?

Therapy can help resolve interpersonal conflicts by helping the client identify patterns that reoccur within their interactions with significant individuals in their lives. These patterns often are created in our past and therapy will help you explore this so that you understand the root of these issues and the steps that you can take to change these patterns. In addition, you will learn effective methods of communication and identify actions that can be taken to repair damaged relationships.
