Counseling for Anxiety

Counseling for Anxiety

Anxiety can strike at any moment, usually without warning and at the worst possible time. Anxiety is a stress-induced worry that is accompanied by unrelenting intrusive thoughts, fears, and concerns which can often lead to panic and even feeling short of breath. Other symptoms of anxiety may include:

  • Nervousness, restlessness or being tense
  • Feelings of danger, panic or dread
  • Rapid breathing or hyperventilation
  • Increased or heavy sweating
  • Trembling or muscle twitching
  • Weakness or lethargy
  • Difficulty focusing or thinking clearly about anything other than the thing you’re worried about
  • Insomnia
  • Obsessions about certain ideas, a sign of obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Anxiety surrounding a particular life event or experience that has occurred in the past, a sign of post-traumatic stress disorder

Anxiety can be persistent and oftentimes not recognized because it can be accompanied by symptoms of depression. Anxiety disorders take on many forms and should be assessed and diagnosed by a professional.

Some forms of anxiety include:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (excessive worry about a number of different things, this worry often causes distress and interferes with daily life)
  • Social Anxiety (fear, worry, and panic related to being around others in various social settings)
  • Post Traumatic Stress (anxiety brought on by a traumatic event which is often associated with flashbacks, nightmares, heightened responses and avoidance of situations which bring back memories)

Research suggests that 30-60% of individuals who identify as LGBTQ experience anxiety and depression; This is more than 2 times higher than our heterosexual counterparts. These rates are not surprising when we consider that members of the LGBTQ+ community encounter more instances of discrimination, social injustice, and barriers to acceptance. If you or someone you know suffers from anxiety, the good news is that counseling can help.

Counseling for anxiety will help you to uncover the underlying causes of your worries and fears, learn how to relax, look at situations in a less frightening way and develop better coping mechanisms and problem-solving skills.
